We are moving all Atari Lynx related content over to Atari Lynx Vault and all our shop content over to K-Retro Gaming. Please update your bookmarks!

As a result of this change, the following will no longer be available: Online Lynx Emulator, Collection Tracker, Game Ratings, News. If you are interested in contributing content to Atari Lynx Vault, we are seeking editors and maintainers.

Why is this happening? First - the Atari Gamer branding is changing to K-Retro Gaming to allow us to expand to providing games, replacement parts, and mod services to other game consoles. And second - The content management system running Atari Gamer is out of date and Google AppEngine (where the website runs) will no longer allow it to run after the 30th January 2024, so in order to preserve all content we switched to a new and modern content management system and chose a website domain that better suits the subject matter. Since we are operating this website in our spare time, on top of full time family and job committments, some features had to be dropped.

We've heard about Star Blader being in development a few weeks ago and now we've finally seen the fruits of this venture. Version 0.5 has been released, this is a playable demo version and shows quite a bit of potential.

The game is clearly inspired by Star Wars, with it's introduction screen and story line. Also are those Light Swords?

It's fun to play, though limited in features now the team assures us that they will continue on working on this game to expand it. Can't wait to see where this leads!

Check out the gameplay video...

You can play it online right now here at Atari Gamer too.

We reported not long ago that FPGAzumSpass (@AzumFpg) has started work on an Atari Lynx core for MiSTer, well it looks like he's released the code for everyone to try. See his update below...

#MiSTerFPGA Atari Lynx core is released now: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/AtariLynx_MiSTer…If you like the core or want to support future cores, you can support my work on Patreon: https://patreon.com/FPGAzumSpass

Remember Xump - The Final Run? It's been two years since it was released on Atari Lynx and now we have some more updates to it this Easter. So head on over to the Retroguru website or the itch.io download and grab it for free. Alternatively you can play it online in your web browser right here on Atari Gamer.

Here's a small update from the developer...

During Easter they need new 😍 Atari Lynx 😍 stuff, they said... and certainly, what they said is important! So here is some fresh Atari Lynx stuff. Xump v1.2 for AtariLynx has been slightly updated and sounds a lot better! Thanks Gisberto Rondinella and MichaΕ‚ Szpilowski!

The fourth iteration of the "HOMEBREW" reviews video has landed. As usual it explores the nooks and crannies of what's listed in the Atari Lynx game database. You can watch it below or check it out on YouTube.

This is the selection of ROMs reviewed in this video...
Berzerkoids, Biniax, Bitchy, Booster, Bobo, Bubble Trouble

Sky Raider Redux is currently in development and is an enhanced version of the original Sky Raider game for Atari Lynx. The game is looking to be shaping up rather well and a new screenshot shared recently by Songbird Productions goes to show some of the new graphics

Check it out, doesn't it look great?.....

Fadest, the author of YNXA and the upcoming YNXA full version release has just made his game engine available for beta testing. This is a no-code game maker, though there are a still a few hoops to jump through.

Games are limited to puzzle-platformed style games, exactly like YNXA is. Music has to be composed in ABCmusic. There are also limitations on enemy types, number of switches and gems and level composition. Even with those limitations, this looks like a really fun project to get started with Lynx coding.

If you're interested in beta testing, head on over to this AtariAge forum thread and leave a comment - Looking for beta-testers : want to create puzzle-platformer games (like Ynxa) with no code on Lynx ?

This has been requested by many and it's been very close to completion for a long time, unfortunately life got in the way of finishing it sooner...but better late than never. So now we're pleased to announce that the ElCheapoSD Menu v2.2203.1 is finally available for download!

This is a replacement menu for the BennVenn ElCheapoSD for Atari Lynx cartridge. This menu has the following features:

  • Runs on default firmware (this makes it limited to a maximum of 256 ROMs and has no directories support, new firmware from BennVenn is in the works to address this)
  • ROM list scrolling and pagination (up/down to move through the ROM list, left/right to skip forward/back a screen full of ROMs)
  • Displays up to 16 ROMs at a time
  • Scrollbar with position indicator
  • Changeable colour themes
  • Files beginning with a . (dot) or _ (underscore) are removed from the ROM list; if you use macOS to copy files, you will not get junk displayed
  • ROM list is sorted alphabetically
  • Configurable settings

So head on over to the itch.io page and download the menu. Installation is simple, just copy the BOOT.bin file from the downloaded ZIP to your SD card. We're planning to add more features in the future. Remember this is an independent project, not related to BennVenn and not funded by anyone else, so if you like the new menu, please show your support with a small donation at download time!

So you've bought an ElCheapoSD for Atari Lynx and when it arrived, you were faced with one side being a circuit board? Well that looks cool, but everyone likes custom stickers too! So, Kevin, from the AtariAge forums took some time out to create these amazing labels you can print yourself for your ElCheapoSD to give it a different appearance.

Here are a few words from Kevin...

I've been itching to do a label for the BennVenn cart, and finally got around to throwing together a quickie. The idea was to use the tie-dye pattern at the top so it matches the rest of the shell, and put something Lynx-like where a label normally goes. I didn't plan on using the circuitboard on the label, but once I scanned it in for sizing, I liked it better than the plain orange or purple.

We've also talked to Kevin and have the original 600DPI images, which are uploaded to Thingiverse here - Cartridge label for the BennVenn ElCheapoSD cart for Atari Lynx

We've already talked about YNXA being updated and getting a new release with an expanded story line and more levels, well Fadest has teased with another update and wow how big is the "big level" ?! Wow!

A few words from Fadest, the author...

The prologue has been redone from scratch.
But, once you go through all the abilities, now another game will start, you will have to go through a very big level (28 times bigger than a classic one).

The Path of which were the main part of previous release are still here, but now there will be 4 level per Path of instead of 3. Just have a look on the new level 42 from Path of Discovery

That's impressive! What's even more impressive is that Fadest is using the "Tiled" map editor for the game, meaning that creating and tweaking levels will be much easier than what it would have been if the levels were "coded" by hand.

Xump 2 was the winning entry of the Lynx 2020 Programming Competition and now it's been polished off and coding has finished. The game is released free of charge as a ROM over the the Retroguru website (direct download link).

Here's the announcement from Retroguru...

Atari's Lynx handheld has been released in the EU in 1990. Now we do have 2021 and it's time for Xump 2 to be on #Atari #Lynx in it's final release (unless you find bugs). The #game #ROM is #free! Simply help Misuki to clean up deserted space fields. If you would be interested to get your hands on a physical release, please let us know so we may prepare one.

This game would have been not possible without:

  • Code: Gisberto Rondinella (nop90)
  • Graphics, Character Design: Christian Damm (Ragnarok)
  • Character Design: Christian Hildenbrand (Daydream)
  • Graphics Downgrade: Jonathan Dodd (Dulcahn)
  • Music: Jakub Szelag (AceMan)
  • Music for Atari Lynx: Michal Szpilowski (Miker)
  • Beta-Test, Trailer: Denny MΓΌller (Mulle)
  • Poster Design: Esraa Alesber (Amaya)
  • Sound Effects: Andrew Lemon (ne7)
  • Producer, Beta-Test, Levels: Shahzad Sahaib (Kojote)
Thanks everyone involved in the project. Marvelous job!

Make sure to watch the excellent game trailer before you go downloading the game...

You will be able to play this ROM on our website in the next couple of days.
